Beyond from being a form of art, dancing is in fact a pleasurable exercise too. It is a workout that challenges body coordination, memory, and one’s artistic expression. And if not everyone is at ease in particular dance there are plenty types such as contemporary hip-hop, ballroom, and folk to choose from.
Incorporating dancing in workouts like Zumba and Taebo is not surprising. This is because dynamics steps add excitement to usual counting and movement. In Christopher Bergland’s, world-class endurance athlete and author, article on Psychology Today, he shared the research called “The Neuroanatomical Correlates of Training-Related Perceptuo-Reflex Uncoupling in Dancers,” which discovered that long and intensive years of training can help dancers to manage dizziness.
“Dizziness, which is the feeling that we are moving when in fact we are still, is a common problem. I see a lot of patients who have suffered from dizziness for a long time. Ballet dancers seem to be able to train themselves not to get dizzy, so we wondered whether we could use the same principles to help our patients,” Department of Medicine at Imperial doctor Barry Seemungal shared also on Bergland’s article.
“It’s not useful for a ballet dancer to feel dizzy or off balance. Their brains adapt over years of training to suppress that input. Consequently, the signal going to the brain areas responsible for perception of dizziness in the cerebral cortex is reduced, making dancers resistant to feeling dizzy. If we can target that same brain area or monitor it in patients with chronic dizziness, we can begin to understand how to treat them better.”
Meantime, Richard Powers revealed on socialdance.stanford.edu of Standford University that dancing also may make people smarter and stay away from Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. The historic and contemporary social dance teacher for than 40 years also shared the study of the New England Journal Medicine which proved that among physical activities such as swimming, bicycling, walking, doing housework and dancing, it’s only the latter that can help to prevent dementia. It got 76 % score, which actually higher than cognitive activities like reading (35%) and playing crossword puzzles (47%).
“That was the greatest risk reduction of any activity studied, cognitive or physical,” Powers shared.
