Sitting is one of the natural actions that every human do in their day-to-day routine. But even if it’s not treated as luxury, it is now somewhat considered as vice like smoking that little by little kill human. There are some studies that link that those sitting for longer time may potentially obtain diabetes, stroke, cancer, heart diseases, obesity and others. How it happen that even human just not doing anything they are not prone to deadly illness?
“Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death,” Dr. James Levine, also inventor of the treadmill desk and director of the Mayo Clinic-Arizona State University Obesity Solutions Initiative, shared in his interview with LA Times.
Levine added that an hour of sitting is equal to two hours loss of one’s life span. But the doctor emphasized that what really bad is sitting all day long and the sedentary lifestyle. So he advised that people should get up more and do other active activities.
Best-selling author Tom Rath also saying the same idea and according to his Twitter message sitting is “the most underrated health treat of modern time.” He added that according to researches people risk their life by mere sitting more than six hours in a day.
“Inactivity is dangerous,” Rath’s explained, “In fact, some research shows inactivity now kills more people than smoking.”
If smoking and second-hand smoke are associated with lung cancer, long-hour of sitting is connected many diseases that also includes dementia, deep vein thrombosis, brittle bones, and depression. According to Mirror’s story uninterrupted sitting affects decrease body’s metabolism, but boost blood pressure and blood glucose levels. If it continue for a long period that when risk of having stroke, heart disease etcetera comes because damages in arteries become severe.
Mirror also reported that even a country’s economy is affected by uninterrupted sitting of its people. In United Kingdom, it is said that average British sits for 8.9 hours per day.
“The World Health Organisation (WHO) has already identified physical inactivity as the fourth biggest killer on the planet, ahead of obesity. It now costs the UK economy more than £1billion every year in sick days due to back, neck and muscle problems and that figure is still rising,” the Mirror shared.
Walking and jogging for people who are not push to sit like office workers and drivers. However, little actions such as walking and standing can help to lessen several health risks. WHO suggested that 30 minutes of moderate exercise in a week is good, but it’s better to avoid sitting for too long as well
“A person may have got more than 30 minutes’ exercise by cycling to work and home again, but if they have been sitting still all day they will lose some of those benefits. It is like exercising but then eating an unhealthy diet or exercising and being a smoker. Physical inactivity is equally as important as those other well-known issues like diet and smoking,” Chester University’s exercise science expert Dr. John Buckley said in his interview with Mirror.
