Sleepwalking, a deadly sleep disorder?

It’s very rare and yet, sleepwalking is one of the dangerous sleep disorders.  In fact, it is reported that Canadian designer and TV personality Chris Hyndman, who was discovered dead nearby his apartment with spouse Steven Sabados, was killed by accident due to sleepwalking.

In an interview of the Guardian with Dr. Colin Shapiro, director of the Youthdale Child & Adolescent Sleep Clinic, she said that it is possible that one can die because he or she sleepwalks.

“People can essentially do anything,” the University of Toronto professor said. “They can walk in their sleep, they can talk in their sleep, they can eat in their sleep, they can drive their car in their sleep and they can have sex in their sleep.”

Shapiro added that sleepwalking can be trigger by exhaustion form exercise, fever, lack of sleep, and intake of sleeping pills.

“Anything that increases the depth of your sleep — so that could be sleep medication, that could be alcohol, that could be exercise, that could be staying awake too long,” Shapiro added.

sleepwalkingMeanwhile, US’ National Library of Medicine noted that sleepwalking happened most of the time to 5 to 12 year-old kids.   There are no significant treatments for sleepwalkers as simple tranquiller can do for some cases. However, it’s good to wake them because they danger they may get.

“The normal sleep cycle has stages, from light drowsiness to deep sleep. During the stage called rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, the eyes move quickly and vivid dreaming is most common,” National Library of Medicine informed. “Each night people go through several cycles of non-REM and REM sleep. Sleepwalking (somnambulism) most often occurs during deep, non-REM sleep (stage 3 or stage 4 sleep) early in the night. If it occurs during REM sleep, it is part of REM behavior disorder and tends to happen near morning.”

The agency added that sleepwalkers are not disturbed; they can back to their normal sleep behavior after a few seconds or longer than 30 minutes.   Meantime,  to prevent it to happen they advised to cure insomnia if you have it because it can triggers sleepwalking as well as getting too tired and stress.
